Why Choose a Separate Battery and Inverter?

Many portable power stations combine the battery, inverter, charger and electronic controls into one enclosure. This all-in-one design is convenient, but may limit flexibility when the battery ages, the inverter needs replacement, or additional runtime is required.

The BiXPower modular system keeps the battery and inverter separate, offering several important advantages.

1. Easy Battery Replacement

All rechargeable batteries gradually lose capacity through aging and repeated charge cycles. With a modular power station, you can replace the battery independently while continuing to use a functional inverter.

There is no need to replace the entire power station simply because the battery has reached the end of its useful life.

2. Easy Inverter Replacement

If the inverter requires repair or replacement, the battery can remain in service. A compatible replacement inverter may be connected without replacing the battery.

This can reduce maintenance costs and extend the useful life of the overall system.

3. Carry Spare Batteries for Extended Runtime

One of the greatest advantages of the modular design is the ability to carry additional fully charged compatible batteries.

When the first battery becomes depleted, turn off the inverter, disconnect the battery and replace it with another charged battery.

You can extend total available runtime without purchasing another inverter.

4. Easier to Carry and Transport

The BX2494 lithium-ion battery weighs approximately 5.5 lb, while the inverter weighs approximately 2.1 lb.

Instead of carrying one combined unit, you can carry the components separately. This may be especially convenient when transporting equipment in backpacks, tool bags or limited storage spaces.

5. Lower Long-Term Replacement Costs

A battery and an inverter have different service lives. In an integrated system, replacing one internal component may require specialized service or replacement of the complete unit.

With separate components, you can replace only the part that needs attention, potentially reducing long-term ownership costs.

6. More Flexible Battery Capacity

The modular design provides flexibility when your energy requirements change.

You may use other manufacturer-approved compatible batteries with suitable voltage, discharge capability, protection and connectors.

Battery capacity can therefore be selected according to your application, rather than being permanently tied to one inverter enclosure.

7. Better Heat Management Flexibility

Inverters generate heat during operation. Keeping the inverter separate from the battery allows more flexibility in positioning the inverter where adequate cooling airflow is available.

This can reduce direct heat exposure between components when they are positioned appropriately.

8. Easier Maintenance and Troubleshooting

The battery, inverter, charger and connection cables can be inspected individually.

If a problem occurs, qualified personnel can test the components separately to identify the source of the problem.

9. Less Electronic Waste

When one component wears out, there is no need to discard other components that remain functional.

This modular approach can help reduce unnecessary electronic waste and encourage responsible battery replacement and recycling.

10. Greater Installation Flexibility

The battery and inverter can be positioned separately where suitable for the application.

This is useful for portable installations, equipment compartments and custom power setups, provided cables are correctly rated and ventilation requirements are followed.

11. More Convenient Backup Planning

Keep an additional charged battery ready for emergencies, outdoor activities or longer operating periods.

The same inverter can be reused with compatible batteries sequentially.

12. Independent Component Upgrades

As your equipment requirements change, you may be able to replace the inverter or battery independently with compatible alternatives.

This provides more flexibility than a permanently integrated system with fixed internal components.

Important: A modular system is not automatically lighter, smaller or more efficient than every integrated power station of equal capacity. Its primary advantages are independent component replacement, easier handling, maintenance flexibility and the ability to swap compatible batteries.

Modular vs. Integrated Portable Power Stations

Temperature-Controlled Cooling Fan

The inverter includes a temperature-controlled cooling fan. The fan turns on when internal temperature reaches its operating threshold and stops when the inverter cools sufficiently.

This helps reduce unnecessary fan operation while maintaining cooling when needed.

Why Pure Sine Wave Power Matters

Pure sine wave inverters produce an AC waveform that more closely resembles utility electricity than the stepped waveform produced by many modified sine wave inverters.

Pure sine wave output is generally preferable for many electronic power adapters, audio/video devices, certain motors, battery chargers and other equipment that may not operate properly with modified sine wave power.

Depending on the device, pure sine wave power may reduce buzzing, electrical interference and compatibility problems.

Understanding the 300W Inverter Rating

The inverter is rated for 300W continuous AC output, but the actual power available from the complete battery-and-inverter system also depends on the battery's discharge-current limit, battery voltage and inverter efficiency.

The BX2494 battery is rated for 15A continuous discharge. At 25.2V nominal voltage, that corresponds to approximately 378W of DC power.

At an assumed 85% conversion efficiency, this would provide approximately 321W of AC power before accounting for additional operating limitations.

However, battery voltage decreases during discharge. At 20V and 15A, available DC power is approximately 300W, equivalent to about 255W AC at 85% efficiency.

Important Power Limitation: Although the inverter is rated for 300W continuous output, the combined system may not sustain a 300W AC load under all battery conditions. Actual available output depends on battery voltage, discharge limits, temperature and protection thresholds. The inverter's 600W peak rating does not mean the included battery can necessarily support a 600W AC surge.

Estimated Battery Runtime

The 322Wh battery stores approximately 322 watt-hours of rated energy. Actual AC runtime depends on the device's average power consumption, inverter conversion losses, inverter idle consumption, battery condition and temperature.

The following estimates assume an illustrative 85% energy-delivery factor.

Average AC Power Consumption Estimated Runtime
20WApproximately 13.7 hours
40WApproximately 6.8 hours
60WApproximately 4.6 hours
100WApproximately 2.7 hours
150WApproximately 1.8 hours
200WApproximately 1.4 hours
250WApproximately 1.1 hours

Estimated runtime formula: 322Wh × 0.85 ÷ average AC load in watts.

These are theoretical planning estimates, not guaranteed operating times. Low-power applications may experience proportionally greater losses from inverter standby consumption. High-power applications may stop earlier because of battery current limits or voltage-dependent protection.

Extend Runtime with Spare Batteries

Unlike a power station with a permanently integrated battery, this modular system allows additional compatible charged batteries to be kept ready for use.

For example:

  • One 322Wh battery provides 322Wh of rated stored energy.
  • Two 322Wh batteries provide a combined 644Wh of rated energy when used sequentially.
  • Three 322Wh batteries provide a combined 966Wh of rated energy when used sequentially.
  • Four 322Wh batteries provide a combined 1,288Wh of rated energy when used sequentially.

The same inverter can be reused with each battery. There is no need to purchase another inverter for every additional battery.

This is especially useful for camping, extended outdoor activities, remote work and backup power planning.

Battery Connection Safety: Additional batteries should be used individually and sequentially. Turn off the inverter before changing batteries. Do not connect multiple batteries in series or parallel unless expressly approved by the battery manufacturer.
